Wuhan Greenland Center, Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture Is Now Under Construction in Wuhan, China

CHICAGO, 30 March 2016 – Wuhan Greenland Center, designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), is now under construction in Wuhan, China. The 636 meter tall, 120-story, mixed-use tower will have 300,000 square meters of floor area, including 200,000 square meters of offices, 50,000 square meters of residential space, and a 45,000 square meter Ritz Carlton hotel. When completed, Wuhan Greenland Center will be a true new icon for Wuhan’s skyline and will be the third tallest building in the world.

Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province in central China, is located on Jianghan Plain which joins the Hanjiang River and the Yangtze River. Divided by the Yangtze, Wuhan is known as the “Three Towns of Wuhan” with Hankou and Hanyang on the west bank, and Wuchang on the east. The three tapered sides of Wuhan Greenland Center represent the three cities and two rivers that intersect to form one unified city.

The building’s uniquely streamlined form combines three key formal concepts—a tapered body, softly rounded corners, and a domed top—that reduce wind resistance and vortex action, which builds up around supertall towers. Further assisting in venting wind pressure against the tower, apertures in the curtain wall have been placed at regular intervals. These apertures also house window-washing systems and air intake and exhaust systems on mechanical floors.

“One of the distinctive features of Wuhan Greenland Center is the innovative introduction of vents at the tips of the three legs of the tower at vertical quarter sections. The vents will reduce wind pressure on the tower and reduce the vortices that can cause horizontal acceleration of movement.  This feature, along with the elegant tapering of the tower, is an essential element in the performative design concept,” says AS+GG Partner Adrian Smith. “Another important feature is that the tower exterior wall is made up of both vertical polished stainless steel fins and perforated aluminum horizontal sun shading devices that will protect the interior from both strong mid-day and afternoon solar conditions.”

A variety of sustainable approaches were incorporated into Wuhan Greenland Center that will make it one of the most energy-effective supertall buildings in the world, with an energy savings of  51% compared to a typical office building: a greywater recovery system takes waste water from hotel laundry, sinks, and showers and then reuses it in the building’s evaporative cooling system; a high-efficiency lighting system uses low-energy-consuming ballasts and lamps to reduce required power consumption; and water-conserving low-flow plumbing fixtures will reduce the total amount of potable water required as well as the associated pumping energy.

“This architecture represents the combination of formal relationships (the art) of performance and technical aspects ( the science) of performance which we like to refer to as Form Follows Performance. The inlets and dome reduce wind loads and consequently allow the structure to be more efficient and overall, the sustainable systems range from cutting-edge technologies to fairly low-tech solutions,” says AS+GG Partner Gordon Gill. “An Energy-recovery system which captures energy from the building’s exhaust systems and then uses it to pre-heat or pre-cool air entering the building is incorporated into the ventilation design and daylight-responsive controls and sensors automatically turn off electric lights when sufficient daylight is available. Consequently, this is genuinely a purposeful approach to design, both inside and out."

AS+GG Partner Robert Forest adds, “There is an economics to sustainability and there are many reasons to build high-performance buildings: they have lower operating expenses, they provide a better work environment, and they help companies meet their goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Wuhan Greenland Center’s design is both distinctive and efficient. Its aerodynamic form actually uses less structural material – and therefore is associated with less embodied carbon – needed for construction, saving the client a substantial amount of money.”

Wuhan Greenland Center is a unique blend of the art and a science of Architecture. A purposeful form expressed through a cost effective and functional rationale; an architecture with a strategic performance-based design that is a direct expression of external forces. The tower will be a 21-Century landmark for the city when completed in 2017.

Director Juan Betancur has extensive experience in the design of supertall, commercial and mixed-use sustainable building projects around the world.

Before joining AS+GG in 2008, Juan was an associate and studio head at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he concentrated on large-scale projects in China. On two of the projects—the Shanghai Grand and Nanjing Greenland Financial Center, a 280,000-square-meter mixed-use complex featuring a supertall tower—Juan collaborated with Adrian Smith and/or Gordon Gill while they were at SOM.

Juan’s approach to design emphasizes the geographic, environmental and cultural contexts of each project. Rather than imposing a preconceived style, he allows the project to grow organically out of the site and the design process itself, always striving to arrive at a result that wouldn’t fit anywhere else. And he prefers developing designs primarily with models rather than renderings.

Originally from Colombia, Juan grew up in Miami.

Wuchang Riverfront - Wuhan, China

The Jerde Partnership

Currently In design development, the project consists of high-end retail, and office tower, and residential tower. Built in Wuhan China the project is being built alongside the Wuhan Greenland center, which will be the fourth tallest tower in the world. Conceptually the project bases itself on the sites orientation allowing views and circulation across the whole development on level one. The exterior is made of sharp "crystal" panels, that taper and bend revealing each other at the joints. The Entries, designed to mimic the flow of water over the crystaline whole, erroding the mass of the mall and drawing shoppers in. The interior reflects this crystaline design with "jewels" of foob and beverage, retail and special entertainment activiting the central plaza. The project is vertically activated through various programatic elements at each level including and ice rink, sky-gardens, and a massive glass skylight roof.

Thornton Tomasetti Inc.

http://www.thorntontomasetti.com/

Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for the Wuhan Greenland Center. The 125-story tower will consist of 202,000 square meters of office space, 60,000 square meters of luxury apartments and a 61,000-square-meter five-star hotel. The 600-meter-plus mixed-use structure will be the third tallest building in China and the fourth tallest in the world.

The structural system will consist of a composite concrete core with locally embedded steel plates, a combination that increases strength and enhances ductility. Outrigger trusses, as well as belt trusses will be placed at the mechanical levels, which will connect to the core or super columns. The floor system will be composite structure, consisting of concrete slab, metal deck and steel beam. This structural system is very popular, particularly in East Asia where concrete prices are much cheaper than steel. A composite column with embedded steel provides strength and ductility, and the composite floor system accelerates the construction process.

To reduce wind resistance and vortices action that builds up around super tall towers, the building will feature a tapered body and a domed top. A tapered structure reduces the forces at the top of the building, which results in reducing the overall wind forces and overturning moments.

武汉绿地中心主塔: 结构设计与建筑设计的完美结合

Wuhan Greenland Center Main Tower: Seamlessly Integrating Structure and Architecture

Guoyong Fu 、Juan Betancur 、Dennis Poon 、Mark Dannettel

Abstract

Wuhan Greenland Center Main Tower is a 125-story, 600+ meter mega-tower in China. The tower structural system has been developed to harmonize with the architecture as an integrated whole to maximize efficiency and enhance safety. The distinctive floor “slots” help reduce the vortex shedding effect. Slot locations were coordinated to avoid causing structural discontinuities. Above the roof, steel trussed tripod legs rise from tower plan wing tips to seamlessly complete the building form with a dramatic crown. Design challenges include evaluating building performance under seismic events through PBD and performing Progressive Collapse Analyses to evaluate structural redundancy. Parametric modeling tools were used to reduce cladding costs by maximizing the use of field-warped, flat-glazed panels rather than costly curved glass panels.
