美国马里兰州巴尔的摩市
Baltimore, Maryland at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 10/16/12)
Editor's note: Meant to add this earlier -- hey, happy Friday to all!

A nighttime view of Baltimore, Maryland is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 33 crew member in the International Space Station. Baltimore is located on the U.S. mid-Atlantic coastline along the terminus of the Patapsco River into Chesapeake Bay, and is the largest seaport along this part of the coast. Like many large U.S. metropolitan areas, the most brightly lit area corresponds to the highest density of buildings and typically indicates the urban core -- in this case, downtown Baltimore at center. Highways and large arterial streets appear as bright yellow-orange lines extending outwards from the downtown area into the surrounding suburban regions (light violet and reddish brown regions of diffuse lighting). Dark areas beyond the suburban zone are rural - or to the southeast, indicate the waters of Chesapeake Bay. Small dark patches within the metropolitan area are open space including parks, cemeteries, and the Baltimore Zoo (top left). Two large, brightly-lit areas along Chesapeake Bay are commercial/industrial regions, and include the major port facilities for Baltimore. The City of Baltimore was incorporated in 1796, after serving as the de facto capital of the nascent United States of America during the Second Continental Congress (from Dec. 20, 1776 to March 4, 1777). Today, the Baltimore metropolitan area (as defined by the Baltimore Metropolitan Council) includes over 2.5 million people and includes six Maryland counties (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard) in addition to the City of Baltimore. The region is also a focus of urban ecological research through the Baltimore Ecosystem Study.

中东地区

Middle East at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 06/04/12)
Much of the Middle East is seen in this night time image photographed by one of the Expedition 31 crew members aboard the International Space Station as it flew some 240 miles above the Mediterranean Sea on June 4, 2012. The Nile River Delta is easily recognizable in center frame, and city lights make it easy to see both Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt near the Delta. Two Russian spacecraft -- a Soyuz (left) and a Progress -- appear in the frame while they are docked to the station.

Southeastern USA at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 01/29/12)
Editor's note: Hello, Dixieland. Posted to the NASA Views Earth at Night
Southeastern USA at night is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 30 crew member on the International Space Station. The brightly lit metropolitan areas of Atlanta, GA (center) and Jacksonville, FL (lower right) appear largest in the image with numerous other urban areas forming an interconnected network of light across the region. A large dark region to the northwest of Jacksonville, FL is the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge; likewise the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains form dark swaths to the north of Atlanta, GA and west of Charlotte, NC (center). The faint gold and green line of airglow -- caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting the gas molecules in the upper atmosphere -- parallels the horizon (or Earth limb).

美国芝加哥及其附近区域,最亮那个就是芝加哥

Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area (NASA, International Space Station, 02/02/12)
Editor's note: "Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town / They have the time, the time of their life / I saw a man, he danced with his wife / In Chicago, Chicago..."

This nighttime image, photographed by one of the members of the Expedition 30 crew from the International Space Station, features the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area strung along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan. The region is partially covered by clouds, probably low-hanging, or even fog. Meteorologists say there is a fine line between low thin clouds and fog. Fog is not common in the Great Lakes area this time of the year (usually too windy), but this has been an exceptionally mild winter. The faint gold line of airglow -- caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting the gas molecules in the upper atmosphere -- parallels the horizon or Earth limb. Minor auroral activity (Borealis) is visible in upper right.

A Night View Around the Mediterranean Sea (NASA, International Space Station, 02/25/12)
Editor's note: Gorgeous image from the Human SpaceFlight site (spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/station/crew-30/html/...) last night. The quantity and quality of of the Station images never cease to amaze me.

This nighttime image photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station provides a look toward the Mediterranean Sea. Along the left side, the night lights clearly depict the high population associated with the Nile River and its delta and the Alexandria, Egypt area (top left center). The Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal are seen to the right.

Atlantic Coast at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 02/06/12)
One of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station took this nighttime photograph of much of the eastern (Atlantic) coast of the United States. Large metropolitan areas and other easily recognizable sites from the Virginia/Maryland/Washington, D.C. area spanning almost to Rhode Island are visible in the scene. Boston is just out of frame at right. Long Island and the Greater Metropolitan area of New York City are visible in the lower right quadrant. Large cities in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) are near center. Parts of two Russian vehicles parked at the orbital outpost are seen in left foreground.

美国东部2/3国土

Eastern Two-Thirds of U.S. at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 01/29/12)
This north-looking nighttime panorama of much of the land mass of the eastern two-thirds of the contiguous United States was photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station as it was moving over the Gulf of Mexico on Jan. 29, 2012. In this series, the 24-mm images cover the area from the Atlantic Coast (right) to the eastern edge of the southwestern states and the western Gulf of Mexico. Most of the Florida peninsula is easily recognizable at right edge. The lights of dozens of large metropolitan areas are visible.

美国东海岸
U.S. East Coast at Night (NASA, International Space Station, 01/29/12)
Editor's note: Hello, East Coast -- it must be true that you never sleep!
This Jan. 29 panorama of much of the East Coast, photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station, provides a look generally northeastward: Philadelphia-New York City-Boston corridor (bottom-center); western Lake Ontario shoreline with Toronto (left edge); Montreal (near center). An optical illusion in the photo makes the atmospheric limb and light activity from Aurora Borealis appear "intertwined."

最亮的两个点:左边是费城,右边是纽约
