Having won an international designcompetition, Dutch firm NEXT Architects says that construction will begin nextyear for its novel take on a pedestrian bridge. The span will cross over ariver in Changsha in China's Hunan province, but it won't look anything likeyour typical bridge: three individual paths interleave, rise, and fall, givingit the appearance of an optical illusion. "The construction with theintersecting connections is based on the principal of the Möbius ring,"project architect Michel Schreinemachers says, adding that it also evokes aknot found in ancient Chinese folk art. It'll run 150 meters (492 feet) inlength, rising 24 meters (79 feet) high when it's completed.

Same here! I live in Perth, Australia, andthe public architecture is so conservative. They’re just starting to build somereally cool things now, but for a long time it was held back by criticism fromthe older community that don’t like change.

I work with bridges, and it is not justbecause there is a resistance to newer types of design. These bridges aresignificantly more expensive to engineer and construct. Since bridges are, 99%of the time, paid by the government, you can imagine that they will almostalways take the cheaper bridge over the more modern architectural bridgedesigns. Unless they are doing some type of landmark bridge, which is rare.
Whenever we do a tender project for a newfreeway bridge, there is this internal joke. That the architect on a bridgeprojects finest job, is to decide the color of the road crash barrier…..and thecolor should be gray.

当我们在做一个新的高速公路桥梁的投标项目时，总是存在着一个内部笑话。那些最擅长桥梁建设的建筑师总是要为一些小事情做决定，比如防撞护栏应该是什么颜色。。。。而防撞护栏应该是灰色的。

Haha that’s true, I guess with vehiclebridges they are usually built to fix a traffic issue rather than attractanyone.
I was talking more generally about urbanpublic spaces as a whole though. I should mention that it is only really theolder residents that are conservative. Our state government is actually quitekeen to build some jazzy new things.

哈哈，那倒是真的，我猜他们建造车桥的目的是为了解决交通问题而不是为了吸引游客。
我是从都市公共空间的整体来讨论问题的。我觉得真的只有老市民才会很保守。而我们州政府实际上是很愿意建设一些好看花哨的建筑的。

Agreed. Not only is weird for the sake ofweirdness (like almost all modern art/architecture, it’s about the ego of theartist), it’s (as mentioned above) much more expensive to build andmaintain than any “normal” bridge and it’s far,far, FAR less useful. Consider trying to bring something wider than ahuman across that bridge: woops, you’re taking up the entire width of one ofthe paths and now everyone behind you and ahead of you is incredibly inconvenienced.Same goes with biking, or is that not allowed on this bridge, thus making iteven more useless except as a thing to boggle the minds of people with verysimple tastes.

同意。不仅仅是为了怪异而怪异（像几乎所有的当代艺术那样，主要反映的是艺术家的自我），而且（正如上面所提到的）建造和维护的费用更加的昂贵，而且作用更加的小。把大一点的东西带上去，你整个人就已经把整条道路堵住了，你前面和后面的人就那样被卡在那里了。有些人还骑车上去，或者根本就不允许你骑车上去，不管是那种情况，这种桥梁所起到的作用都大大降低了。除非这种桥梁的作用只是为了让人们眼前一亮。

Remember murica invented the internet,personal computers, microprocessors, transistors, cell phones, wirelessnetworks, e-mail, digital cameras, hard drives, operating systems, gps, creditcards, airplanes, MRIs, LEDs, LCDs, space shuttles, nylon, teflon, microwaves,solar cells and that’s just scratching the surface. Not to mention utter USdominance in the software and web service field. China should focus onpriorities like human rights, air quality, corruption, ect… before spendingmoney on pretty bridges.

美国在技术上还是领先的，而日本的人均债务更高。技术不仅仅只是快速的单元网络和机器狗。美国发明了因特网，个人电脑，微处理器，晶体管，手机，无线网络，电子邮件，数码相机，硬盘驱动器，操作系统，全球定位系统，信用卡，飞机，核磁共振成像，LED，液晶显示器，航天飞机，尼龙，聚四氟乙烯，微波，太阳能电池，这些还只是一小部分。更不要提美国在软件和网络服务领域的主导地位了。中国应该把自己的重心放在人权，空气质量，腐败等问题上，解决了这些问题再来花钱建造漂亮的桥梁吧。
