The city of Ningbo (abbreviated "Yong"), is an economic centre in the southern part of the Yangtze River Delta. The city is located in the middle of the coastline of the Chinese mainland (120°55"-122°16"E and 28°51"-30°33"N) and lies south of Hangzhou Bay, facing Shanghai to the north and is separated from Zhoushan Archipelago in the east by a narrow body of water.
It is one of China's first coastal cities to open up to the outside world. It is also one of the 15 sub-provincial cities and a separate planning city that enjoys the same authority as provincial governments for economic administration and urban planning. With six districts (Haishu, Jiangdong, Jiangbei, Zhenhai, Beilun and Yinzhou), three county-level cities (Yuyao, Cixi and Fenghua) and two counties (Xiangshan and Ninghai) under jurisdiction, the city covers an area of 9, 816 km2 and has a population of 5.78 million. Camellia is the city flower and Camphor Laurel is the city tree.

Ningbo is one of China's oldest cities, with a history dating back to the Hemudu Culture 7,000 years ago. The city was first named "Mingzhou" in 738 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty. In 821 A.D., the local government moved to the confluence of the three rivers and built city walls, which marked the establishment of this city. In 1381 A.D., the city was renamed "Ningbo", which means "serene waves" or "calm waves".

The biggest advantage Ningbo has is a great port with a history of over 1,200 years. The Port of Ningbo boasts 92 10,000-tonnage berths and has established shipping lines with more than 600 ports across 100 countries and regions in the world. In 2013, cargo tonnage of Ningbo Port reached 498 million tons (ranking third in the Chinese mainland and fourth in the world), container volume reached 16.7 million TEU, ranking third place in the Chinese mainland and sixth in the world. The deep-water port enables Ningbo to undertake international industrial transfers and build national-level energy and raw materials bases.

There isn't a single market in the world without a businessman of Ningbo origin. From time immemorial, Ningbo has been a renowned commercial city. Ningbo Merchants were well-known all over the world. A highly-developed private economy is one of the most distinctive features of Ningbo. There are to date, 150,000 private enterprises in Ningbo, and the number of self-employed entrepreneurs has exceeded 350,000. Ningbo is one of the top three major producers of garments and home appliances in China. The city also takes the lead in stationery, injection machines and moulds, as well as the total number of well-known brands produced here. The city has also won honors including "Top 10 Convention & Exhibition Cities in China" and "Best Commercial City in the Chinese Mainland". So far, the private sector contributes 80% of Ningbo's GDP, 70% of profit and tax, and 85% of jobs, far above the national average.

As a National Historical and Cultural City, Ningbo boasts rich cultural heritage, amongst which, 31 heritage sites are under state protection. 108 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences are of Ningbo origin, which is No. 1 amongst all the cities in the country.

In the past three decades since reform and opening up, Ningbo has enjoyed rapid and sound socio-economic development. According to preliminary statistics, the GDP of Ningbo in 2013 stood at US$ 117.4 billion, up 8% year-on-year. Local fiscal revenue amounted to US$ 13.1 billion, up 9.2% year-on-year. Fixed assets investment reached US$ 56.2 billion, up 18% year-on-year. Total retail sales of consumer goods reached US$ 43.5 billion, up 13% year-on-year. The per capita disposable income of urban residents and net income of rural residents increased to US$ 6,892.6 and US$ 3,388.4 respectively, up 10% and 11% respectively. The total volume of import and export of local enterprises reached US$ 100 billion and paid-in foreign investment, US$ 3.27 billion. In 2013, 206 new foreign-invested enterprises and institutions were approved, and outward investment rose by 20%.
